Injuries are always a risk when participating in sports. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the chances. Many injuries result from making common mistakes. We’ll outline some of those pitfalls below.
• Not warming up: Jumping right into activity can lead to strains and sprains no matter your level of physical fitness. A warm-up session before a workout allows the body to get ready for the activity to come. This session should last at least 5-10 minutes.
• Not cooling down: A cool-down session is just as important as a warm-up. A cool-down allows the heart rate to return to normal as well as helping the body pump waste products from the muscles. This helps prevent muscle stiffness after exercise.
• Not staying hydrated: Hydration helps the body function better.
• Ignoring bodily signals: When you are approaching your limits, your body will let you know. Oftentimes, injuries result from not heeding the signs and overworking muscles.
