• About one in 68 children has been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
• ASD occurs in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, but is about 4.5 times more common among boys than among girls.
• Almost half – 46 percent — of children identified with autism spectrum disorder has average to above average intellectual ability.
• Autism impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction, communication skills, and cognitive function.
• On average, children identified with autism spectrum disorder were not diagnosed until after age 4, even though children can be diagnosed as early as 2.
• Autism is among the fastest growing developmental disorders, yet it is very underfunded.
