CDC Releases Flu Season Health Advisory

We all may want to take flu symptoms more seriously this year, especially those 65 and older. In other words, get to the doctor within 24 hours of experiencing flu symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a health advisory highlighting two concerns:

  1. Early testing shows that 52% of the influenza A(H3N2) viruses detected in early flu testing this season are not exactly covered by the current flu vaccine. So, while you should still get vaccinated for the protection it can afford, the flu vaccine is expected to have decreased effectiveness this year.
  2. The influenza A(H3N2) is the dominant strain of virus spreading this year. Historically, flu seasons dominated by the A(H3N2) virus have been associated with higher risk of age-specific hospitalization.

What can your doctor do when you show up with only hours or one-day of flu symptoms? Your doctor can prescribe Tamiflu, Relenza, or maybe something similar. These neuraminidase inhibitor antiviral medications have been shown to reduce the risk of complications and death. Ideally, your doctor will get to prescribe them within 48 hours of your first flu symptoms.

If you are recovering from the flu, we can provide a range of services to protect your health, give you peace of mind, and prevent unnecessary hospitalization.
