Physical Therapy and Exercise Guidelines for Chronic Neck Pain

A recent meta-analysis in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation released guidelines that highlight the importance of physical therapy and exercise in the treatment of chronic neck pain. Physical therapist led exercise, including a combination of strengthening, stretching, and aerobic exercise, is the most effective for improving strength and reducing pain and disability. The researchers determined the most beneficial frequency of exercise to target pain, weakness, and quality of life is three times per week with sessions of 30-45 minutes each. It is also recommended that individuals suffering with chronic neck pain should continue an exercise program for at least six weeks, but up to 12 weeks for optimal results.

“Chronic neck pain can precipitate from poor postural awareness or repetitive sleeping postures as well as trauma, tumors, and degenerative changes,” explained Kelli Wilson, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, from Integrity Rehab’s Copperas Cove Clinic.
